Dec 22, 2022, updated Dec 22, 2022

Did anything good come out of 2022?

Absolutely – Our region showed its great resilience in the face of further challenges. We were able to return to a full Eat Local Week event, Council was properly recognised for its quality of services in a number of  awards, a number of our businesses also won awards, our economy has shown strength, I celebrated my 45th wedding anniversary – and of course who can forget our Lonely Planet recognition as one of the hottest destinations to visit in 2022!

What’s your favourite summer memory?

The whole family Christmases at my father’s place – there’s Grandparents, Uncles, Aunts, cousins and second cousins. There’s a pig on a spit that starts at 4.30pm, presents are exchanged in the morning (and one brother is always late). Cricket begins at 1.00pm. It’s the most wonderful day!

Are you a summer or a winter person?

Summer – I love long days, early mornings, spectacular colours and storms on the mountains; I get a break and enjoy left-overs watching the Boxing Day Test.

How do you stay resilient during periods of change, like the year just gone?

I have a strong faith that carries me, an incredible wife who walks with me, family who forgive my eccentricities and love me, a passionate vision beyond whatever is happening right then, and determination born of my heritage to always build a better tomorrow.

Who were your heroes of 2022?

The Leadership and people of Ukraine – I have always stood against bullies but they have taken that to a new level.

What’s your secret ambition?

Like all Grandparents – to see my Children and Grandchildren enjoying joy filled aspirational lives.

What’s your favourite holiday spot?

Almost anywhere in the fantastic Scenic Rim of course, but in this role I do need to get off grid. Prague or Budapest stand out for rich and invigorating times we have had.

What are you hoping for in 2023?

Get started on the full flood recovery program for our roads; get on with the next key steps in building our strong region; continue to enjoy good health; a little more balance for time with family –  maybe no disaster events would be a change?

What have you been watching on television/streaming services lately? World Cup Football.

Any people or businesses to watch in 2023?

Too many to call – a wealth of local Scenic Rim business operators going to the next level in terms of business, agri-tourism, farming, innovation and more.
