Showcasing the artists behind the James C. Sourris AM Collection, until Sunday July 9 art enthusiasts will have the opportunity to experience a series of in-depth and intimate artist interviews from some of the most significant Australian figures in the art world.

The exhibition shines a light on the practices, experience and inspiration behind the works of leading Queensland artists Vernon Ah Kee, Luke Roberts, Fiona Foley, Judith Wright, Leonard Brown, Anne Wallace, Sandra Selig and Eugene Carchesio.

Minister for the Arts, Leanne Enoch says this exhibit will offer Queenslanders further insight into the creative minds and workings of some of our most renowned artists.

“This compelling exhibition peels back the layers of diverse arts practitioners,” said Enoch.

“Meet the Artists gives context to the stories artists tell through their art and the powerful contribution they make to our state’s cultural identity.”

Curated by Julie Ewington, Meet the Artists is the first time the Sourris collection of interviews, compiled over the past 12 years, has been exhibited.

James C. Sourris AM says this exhibit will be a valuable resource for the future.

“This is history, and it will be there for all time, that’s a wonderful thing,” said Sourris.

“It can be for enjoyment and it can be for learning.”

State Library CEO Vicki McDonald AM believes this Queensland-based project will have notable international significance.

“It (Meet the Artists) is unlike any other in the country, harnessing the power of film to document and preserve the historically important.

“This generous gift to State Library from James and his sister Marica Sourris ensures future generations will understand the contribution of these remarkable artists and art world figures.”
