How Ed, the Chillies and a host of world acts may cause inner city headache

A string of headline acts coming to Brisbane may prove to be a headache for inner city residents as the State Government doubles the number of major events allowable at Suncorp Stadium for the next two years.

The Government had previously imposed a limit of six major concert events at the stadium to mitigate the impact on inner city residents, but now claims that there was a huge post-Covid demand for entertainment and used a website survey that attracted 238 responses as justification.

Already scheduled to play at the stadium are the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Elton John for one concert each while Ed Sheeran has three dates, leaving just one slot for another act.

“More than three quarters, or 78 per cent, of respondents supported a temporary increase in the concert cap, including 168 local residents and businesses in the Lang Park Traffic Area,” Tourism, Sport and Innovation Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said.

He said there was extraordinary demand for use of the stadium and the events brought millions of dollars to the city’s economy.

“We are seeing a stream of major international music acts putting together plans to get back on the road with world stadium tours after Covid,” he said.

“We are not looking to turn Suncorp Stadium into a permanent concert venue. Its primary purpose as a world-class rectangular stadium for three football codes won’t change.

“These are high quality events that will support the sustained recovery of our visitor economy from accommodation had hospitality to tourism operators.”

Suncorp Stadium general manager Alan Graham said the news was a huge boost for the entertainment industry which has essentially been forced into hibernation by Covid.

He said Stadiums Queensland, promoters and the Brisbane City Council would work to minimise the impact on local residents.
