Screen industry body Ausfilm has revealed six of 10 international productions set to film in Australia were secured by Queensland.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the upswing in productions was a result of Queensland’s strong pandemic response.

“Because of our world-class health response and the hard work of all Queenslanders in managing this global pandemic – Queensland has emerged as one of the safest places to film not just in Australia, but around the world,” Palazsczuk said.

“Last year, during the height of COVID the Government helped lure 36 international and domestic productions to Queensland, pumping $350 million into the economy and supporting 4300 jobs.

“Baz Lurhmann’s Elvis biopic and Escape from Spiderhead starring Chris Hemsworth were both filmed on the Gold Coast while Young Rock was filmed in Brisbane. Producers and global audiences have their eyes firmly on our State.

“Next month, Academy Award winning director Ron Howard will start production of Thirteen Lives, the inspiring rescue story of the Thai soccer team trapped in the cave – injecting a further $45 million into the economy and supporting 275 jobs” the Premier said.

The lucrative industry also benefits regional Queensland as Australian Survivor heads to Cloncurry and Netflix teen series Dive Club recently wrapped production in the Far North.

The increase in production deals build on a strong pre-pandemic record of international films migrating to Queensland including Aquaman, Godzilla Vs Kong, Kong: Skull Island, Thor: Ragnarok, and Pacific Rim: Uprising.

“It not only promotes Queensland’s spectacular locations and our exceptional talent but creates a pipeline of industry jobs for cast and crew, in the flow-on industries like catering, set and costume design and trades including construction and electrical,” the Premier said.
