Why Covid can’t get between an intrepid traveller and his inner George Costanza

Trapped between replays of Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm, a belated bout with Covid leaves Phil Brown sweating it out

So, I finally got Covid. I’m over it now though and that’s a relief because by the time you read this, I will be boarding the Great Southern train from Brisbane to Adelaide.

Yes, I know you can fly nowadays but I’m all about slow travel, taking in the scenery, pretending I’m Michael Portillo or Michael Palin or some other train nut.

You may have read that I missed attending Barry Humphries’ state memorial due to Covid which was sad. I tested negative too late.

But I did test negative five days after I tested positive.

So, I had Sunday through Thursday last week at home with what felt like your average lurgi. I was sent downstairs most of that time, to work and to sleep and I wore a mask around the house.

Actually, I got quite a bit of work done and a lot of sweeping and I allowed myself some resting time too. My resting was done watching back-to-back episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm with the dog. Not sure what the dog made of that but I had fun.

The head was a bit fuzzy so I didn’t read much but managed a few more pages of Swann in Love by Marcel Proust, my latest reading challenge.

Being at home for four days was actually quite productive. My wife went out for dinner one evening with her friends (how selfish!) leaving me at home to fend for myself and I was going to cook myself something but then I said to myself … “You have Covid. Get some UberEats. Go on, go crazy.”

And I did with a spicy noodle dish and it was so hot that the sweat was pouring off me as I ate. I was like George Costanza in that Seinfeld episode where he’s sweating from eating the kung pao chicken. “George likes spicy chicken!” he says. You know that one?

Then I retreated to the air-conditioned bedroom to watch more Curb Your Enthusiasm until my wife came home.

We all got a taste of going stir crazy at home during the various lockdowns and I had forgotten how that felt. It all came back to me last week though and by Thursday I was a bit loopy. Or loopier than usual.

Then finally, I tested negative and I was free at last. So how did I celebrate?

I went to the supermarket of course. I had a long list of stuff to get and I do love the supermarket. Yes, I really know how to live, don’t I?
