Police allege the man was driving a black Mazda hatchback in Tugun, on the southern Gold Coast, when he struck the 83-year-old woman on Saturday night.
The 30-year-old allegedly left the scene but was found by police inside his car outside a Currumbin home a short distance away from the crash.
The pedestrian, who was visiting from overseas, was rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition and died on Sunday night.
The Currumbin man has been charged with mid-range drink driving and will face Coolangatta Magistrates Court on March 25.
Police are appealing for anyone with information about the crash to come forward.
