Gold Coast man faces drink-drive charge over death of elderly pedestrian, 83

A man has been charged with drink driving after allegedly hitting an elderly pedestrian who later died in hospital.

Police allege the man was driving a black Mazda hatchback in Tugun, on the southern Gold Coast, when he struck the 83-year-old woman on Saturday night.

The 30-year-old allegedly left the scene but was found by police inside his car outside a Currumbin home a short distance away from the crash.

The pedestrian, who was visiting from overseas, was rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition and died on Sunday night.

The Currumbin man has been charged with mid-range drink driving and will face Coolangatta Magistrates Court on March 25.

Police are appealing for anyone with information about the crash to come forward.
