Only three Australian suburbs made the list and the Valley snuck in at 47. Melbourne’s Fitzroy was 27 and Marrickville in Sydney came in at 33.

As Ray White economist Nerida Conisbee also pointed out, the Valley was relatively affordable with the median unit valued at $435,000 compared with the city median at $470,000.

The Time Out list was headed by Guadalajara in Mexico, followed by Cais do Sodre in Lisbon and Wot Bo Village in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

The Valley was rated as a creative hotspot and a “cool-kid neighbourhood” which the magazine said was now centred on James St, rather than the traditional centre in Brunswick Street.

“Of course you’ll find cafes and bars and chic retailers here but there’s a reason the Valley is dubbed “the suburb that never sleeps’,” Time Out said.

“At night it transforms into a live music hub with young part seekers descending upon the excellent range of clubs, bars and concern halls. If you want a party, this is one of the best places in Australia.”
