People with high-cholesterol may be unaware of the issue as there are no obvious symptoms.

“We estimate that millions of Australians could be unaware that they have high cholesterol and therefore at greater risk of heart attack in the coming years,” said the Heart Foundation’s Erin Bowen.

A national heart disease screening program; an integrated cholesterol awareness campaign targeting people as young as 18; and a digital cardiac rehabilitation program that empower patients regardless of where they live are some of the recommendations being promoted in the foundation’s report.

If implemented by GPs and governments, the recommendations will help to lower the cholesterol levels of the many Australian adults who experience high-cholesterol.

The foundations says it will help to prevent thousands of potential and unnecessary heart attacks and strokes in the future.
