How our columnists tracked the demise of a premier

It’s been a story that InQueensland’s highly experienced and respected stable of columnists picked up on before anyone else.

The slow, inexorable demise of Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk’s political fortunes has been one of the stories of the year and columnists Dennis Atkins, Madonna King and John McCarthy have been plugged into it months before it became headlines elsewhere.

As far back as September, Atkins had this to say: “The most remarkable thing about Palaszczuk’s fall from her heights of personal popularity, is that she has let her greatest strength – her relatability – evaporate. This is something most politicians dream of – the Queensland premier had it in buckets but has squandered it.”

Also in September, King wrote of the premier: “Power delivers a heady air of indifference perhaps, where it’s hard to understand what the lives of those you serve are really like. And it’s hard to see how her current leadership serves as a role model for our daughters, or our sons.”

And McCarthy’s sharp analysis of this government’s policy twists and turns has been second to none. Of the troubled Queens Wharf development he wrote: “If you landed in the country today and someone told you that in Brisbane, we have handed over residency in the city to a $3.6 billion altar to gambling run by a company the Government last year found was not fit to run a casino, you would think the state was crazy.”

Don’t miss their take on the impact of Annastacia Palaszczuk’s political exit in InQueensland throughout today and this week.
