Schrinner calls for renewal as Myer quits its namesake CBD centre

Myer is quitting the Queen Street mall site that carries its name in what is hoped to be a chance to revitalise the building that was opened in 1988.

During its life the Myer Centre has had fun parks and night clubs called the Metropolis and Funkyard and Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner was quick to argue Myer’s decision to leave could be another step in its evolution.

The retailer has reportedly decided not to review its lease at the Queen Street site and was looking elsewhere in the city. Trading at the Queen St store was expected to end in July.

It’s not known how long any shift would take and staff at the store would be offered redeployment where possible.

Chief executive John King said it would still serve the Brisbane community through its other stores as well as on line as it continued to look for a new CBD site “with more appropriate commercial terms”.

“For our loyal customers, we will continue to serve the Brisbane area with our surrounding stores and our 24/7 online business while we explore future Brisbane CBD options, and we thank you for your ongoing loyalty.”

Schrinner said that while it was a sad day for generations of Brisbane residents who have loved shopping at the Queen Street Mall Myer, it’s also a great opportunity for our city centre.

“Myer first opened at its current location just before Expo ‘88 and with the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games on the horizon, now is the perfect time for the centre’s owners to reimagine one of Queensland’s premier retail spaces,” he said.

“I think this is a fantastic opportunity for the centre to be reinvigorated into a vibrant, modern retail experience for residents and visitors and I look forward to working with the owners on their future plans.”
