Fright club: Halloween headlines the best things to do in Brisbane this weekend

We’ve reached the last weekend of October, which just so happens to the weekend before Halloween – and it’s set to be filled with some scary-good events. From Thursday October 27 to Sunday October 30, plenty of fun things are coming to Brisbane including international film festivals, cocktail masterclasses and Halloween parties. Here’s our rundown of the best things to this weekend …

Live shows
A bunch of must-see concerts, gigs and music-soaked soirees are coming to Brisbane this weekend, and we are ready for some live tunes. The Triffid will host a line-up of trivia and music legends for Not On Your Rider’s Halloween Special on Thursday, before house party Defected lands at the venue on Friday. Saturday will see a spooktacular party presented by Biscuit Factory getting folks dancing, and Rage Against The Machine tribute band Bulls On Parade will be taking the stage on Sunday. Melbourne five-piece band Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever is coming to The Tivoli on Thursday, while electropop five-piece Parcels are playing sold-out shows on Saturday and Sunday. Kamaal Williams and a few other supremely talented folks are coming to The Princess Theatre on Thursday, while Butterfingers will play live and loud on Friday. UK’s dark rock legends The Sisters of Mercy will be coming to The Fortitude Music Hall on Friday, while the venue will turn into a Halloween Hall headlined by The Veronicas on Saturday. In true Halloween spirit, CREEPSHOW returns for its second year at The Zoo this Friday with a haunting lineup, and A Love Supreme is once again coming to the Fortitude Valley venue on Saturday. Those chasing some relaxed tunes can grab a blanket and picnic basket to enjoy an afternoon of Gigs & Picnics in the city.

Exhibitions
Curious culture lovers can check out Embodied Knowledge, a focused survey of new work by Queensland artists showing at Queensland Art Gallery. This group of commissioned and recent projects brings to the fore the voices of women, people of colour and LGBTIQA+ artists, all with a close connection to the sunshine state. Fans of Mickey, Minnie, Elsa, Anna and everyone in between are sure to adore Queensland Museum’s newest exhibition, Disney: The Magic of Animation. This kid- and adult-friendly exhibition will draw back the curtain on almost 100 years of the Walt Disney Animation Studios, revealing the magic and hard work behind scenes of your favourite animated films. Jewellery lovers can take their peepers over to Museum of Brisbane to discover World of Wonder: Margot McKinney, a mesmerising celebration of the brand that is Margot McKinney. You’ll be able to set your eyes upon a treasure chest of jewels – from magnificent opals and eye-catching pearls to rare, exotic gems like blue tanzanite, lilac amethyst and pink tourmalines. Giving us the perfect excuse to wander around the city is Brisbane City Council’s newest Outdoor Gallery exhibition, play/ground. City strollers are set to be wowed by a series of breathtaking artworks in light boxes, banners, vitrines, and evening projections across destinations including Howard Smith Wharves, Ann Street and Fish Lane. Art lovers must be quick to check out the Brisbane Portrait Prize Exhibition, which is running at Brisbane Powerhouse until October 30. With portraits ranging from digital and photography to traditional acrylic and oil paintings, there’s truly something for everyone!

Other fun things
Those feeling extra adventurous this weekend can hit up Brisbane’s most ‘grammable experience – Imaginaria. The stunning immersive play experience combines audio-visual art, inflatable architecture, light installations and futuristic gamification suitable for all ages. You can also get lost in DayDream at Wintergarden, a pop-up mindfulness experience featuring more than 20,000 lights and an ambient soundspace. From now until December 3 you can treat yourself to some quality you-time at the Medibank Feel Good Program. Set in the serene surrounds of South Bank Parklands, the program is offering a range of classes to suit all ages and fitness levels. Surrender yourself to the serenity at yoga, get pumped up at energy class and even bring along your little one for the mini and me classes. The creatures of the putt putt course are back from the dead for Halloween Putt Putt, which is back at Victoria Park until October 31. Be sure to proceed with caution as you head onto their fairways filled with spooks galore! Lovers of F. Scott Fitzgerald can immersive themselves in 1920s glamour at The Great Gatsby: An Immersive Theatrical Production. Led by an ensemble cast of the highest calibre Australian actors, this production will offer audiences the opportunity to experience the story of Gatsby as they have never seen it before. Expect secret rendezvous, dramatic confrontations, bootleg gin and a party that only Gatsby could throw. We hope you’re holding onto your umbrellas as Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s supercalifragilistic new production of Mary Poppins is currently showing at QPAC for a strictly limited season. It’s set to be a practically perfect time. Movie lovers can revel in a roster of exciting flicks from across the globe at Brisbane International Film Festival 2022, which is returning from October 27 to November 6 with a program of cinematic gems. Experience a culture rich in music, movement and colour with Global Fusion India this Saturday at the Thomas Dixon Centre. You can enjoy a Indian-inspired banquet dinner, a stellar line-up of musicians and a special Garba Fusion dance. Join the crème de la crème of Australian fashion on Friday at West Village for the annual Brisbane Fashion Month Resort Finale. This year’s line-up of designers who will be showcasing their work in the lifestyle and resort-wear space includes Apero, Gina Kim, Chamani, Urbbana, Why Mary, Red Ridge the Label, Wil Valor, Pagoni, Anannasa and Sacha Drake.

Markets and foodie fun
If you’re eager to stroll through some stalls and stock up on some fresh fruit and veg, be sure check out these markets happening – Saturday Fresh Market, Riverside Markets, Kelvin Grove Village Market, Jan Powers Farmers Markets, Davies Park Market, Carseldine Markets and the Redcliffe Markets. For delicious dinnertime eats, Eat Street Northshore is on for your snacking pleasure on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. For a hint of mystery, head to Westoria this Friday – a brand-new night market bringing a sense of wonder, excitement and sense-enlivening magic to 120 Jane Street, just next door to the home of the West End Markets at Davies Park. Expect stilt walkers and fire twirlers weaving through the crowd, tarot-card readers telling fortunes, aromatic street-food stalls hawking all sorts of tempting eats, bars dispensing beers, wines and signature cocktails, and musicians filling the air with sweet sounds. Skip the supermarket and do your weekly shop in the Scenic Rim on Sunday, as you meander through the Farm Gate Trail. Brisbane locals heading out to the country can expect a day full of farm-fresh produce, cuddles with lambs, selfies with camels, flower-crown making and plenty of wine, beer and food tastings to keep your stomachs full. Customs House will be celebrating the best of spring as a new seasonal pop-up launches on its riverside terrace on this week. The Chandon Garden Spritz pop-up will transform the primo waterfront location into an inner-city paradise, with greenery-laden open-air garden domes giving guests an attractive spot to sip on flutes of champagne and snack on an assortment of tasty morsels. Calling all cocktail connoisseurs – W Brisbane is hosting three exclusive cocktail masterclasses on Thursday and Sunday with the team behind the “#1 World’s Best Bar”.
