Our big fat Greek Festival – What’s on in Brisbane this weekend

Eager to make the most of this weekend? Us too! That’s why we have rounded up some of the best events happening in around The City over the next few days. From Thursday October 13 to Sunday October 16, plenty of fun things are coming to Brisbane including a huge Greek festival, Oktoberfest celebrations, paint-and-sip sessions and Rocky Horror Picture Show alums. Here’s our rundown of the best things to this weekend …

Live shows
A bunch of must-see concerts, gigs and music-soaked soirees are coming to Brisbane this weekend, and we are ready for some live tunes. Scottish extreme metal outfit Frontierer will be coming to The Zoo on Thursday, followed by We Lost The Sea on Friday, WIIGZ on Saturday, and Bed By Nine on Sunday, which features a line-up of Brisbane’s best emerging talent. The Princess Theatre is hosting The John Lennon Songbook on Sunday, while The Tivoli will welcome the UK’s breakout rising rap star ArrDee on Thursday, Bryce Mills’ and Campbell Walker’s (Struthless) chaotic audio-visual experience God Is Dead Live on Friday and indie electro-pop duo Alta Falls on Sunday. Over at The Fortitude Music Hall, Johnny Cash lovers can get their fix at the Leaving Jackson – The Johnny Cash and June Carter show. English rock band The Charlatans are coming to The Triffid on Thursday, dubstep DJ Subtronics will be taking the decks on Friday, LA-based R&B-pop duo Emotional Oranges are hitting the stage on Saturday, and Isolation Trivia’s new gameshow, Game on Mole! will be premiering on Sunday. Australia’s favourite wine-and-music pairing, Grapevine Gathering, is finally heading to Queensland as part of its winery tour of Australia, sliding into Sirromet Wines this Sunday. The line-up is packed with some of your favourite homegrown party-starters including The Kooks, Peking Duk, Confidence Man, The Veronicas and Ball Park Music. For the first time since starring as Columbia in the original Rocky Horror Picture Show, Nell Campbell takes to the stage at Brisbane Powerhouse this Saturday in her one-woman conversational, taking audiences on an unmissable time warp through a life that is stranger than (science) fiction!

Exhibitions
Curious culture lovers can check out Embodied Knowledge, a focused survey of new work by Queensland artists showing at Queensland Art Gallery. This group of commissioned and recent projects brings to the fore the voices of women, people of colour and LGBTIQA+ artists, all with a close connection to the sunshine state. Fans of Mickey, Minnie, Elsa, Anna and everyone in between are sure to adore Queensland Museum’s newest exhibition, Disney: The Magic of Animation. This kid- and adult-friendly exhibition will draw back the curtain on almost 100 years of the Walt Disney Animation Studios, revealing the magic and hard work behind scenes of your favourite animated films. Jewellery lovers can take their peepers over to Museum of Brisbane to discover World of Wonder: Margot McKinney, a mesmerising celebration of the brand that is Margot McKinney. You’ll be able to set your eyes upon a treasure chest of jewels – from magnificent opals and eye-catching pearls to rare, exotic gems like blue tanzanite, lilac amethyst and pink tourmalines. The artworks follow a group of playful misfits that have checked into the hotel donned in colourful costumes, and have made the space their playground. Giving us the perfect excuse to wander around the city is Brisbane City Council’s newest Outdoor Gallery exhibition, play/ground. City strollers are set to be wowed by a series of breathtaking artworks in light boxes, banners, vitrines, and evening projections across destinations including Howard Smith Wharves, Ann Street and Fish Lane. Art lovers must be quick to check out the Brisbane Portrait Prize Exhibition, which is running at Brisbane Powerhouse until October 30. With portraits ranging from digital and photography to traditional acrylic and oil paintings, there’s truly something for everyone!

Other fun things
Those feeling extra adventurous this weekend can hit up Brisbane’s most ‘grammable experience – Imaginaria. The stunning immersive play experience combines audio-visual art, inflatable architecture, light installations and futuristic gamification suitable for all ages. You can also get lost in DayDream at Wintergarden, a pop-up mindfulness experience featuring more than 20,000 lights and an ambient soundspace. From now until December 3 you can treat yourself to some quality you-time at the Medibank Feel Good Program. Set in the serene surrounds of South Bank Parklands, the program is offering a range of classes to suit all ages and fitness levels. Surrender yourself to the serenity at yoga, get pumped up at energy class and even bring along your little one for the mini and me classes. The creatures of the putt putt course are back from the dead for Halloween Putt Putt, which is back at Victoria Park until October 31. Be sure to proceed with caution as you head onto their fairways filled with spooks galore! Lovers of F. Scott Fitzgerald can immersive themselves in 1920s glamour at The Great Gatsby: An Immersive Theatrical Production. Led by an ensemble cast of the highest calibre Australian actors, this production will offer audiences the opportunity to experience the story of Gatsby as they have never seen it before. Expect secret rendezvous, dramatic confrontations, bootleg gin and a party that only Gatsby could throw. Oktoberfest Brisbane is back for a second weekend of festivities at Brisbane Showgrounds, reuniting lovers of German culture at Australia’s biggest and most authentic annual celebration. Strap into your lederhosen! After a two-year absence and a weather-related postponement, Paniyiri Greek Festival is returning to Musgrave Park in South Brisbane for a two-day celebration of all things Greek! This Saturday and Sunday, locals will be able to flock to the festival grounds and enjoy a jam-packed program featuring cultural presentations, cooking demonstrations, live entertainment, traditional Hellenic dancing, art exhibitions, fashion parades and food stalls. Film fanatics are encouraged to pack the car with pillows, popcorn and plenty of snacks as 10 Things I Hate About You is coming to Yatala Drive-In on Saturday. Those with a penchant for painting should grab a ticket to Treasury Brisbane’s fourth instalment of Cork, Culinary & Colour, which will see the Treasury Hotel Courtyard transformed into a garden-party-style studio this Sunday. This arty afternoon is filled with cocktails, creativity and some crackin’ charcuterie bites, so all you need to do is get ready to paint and sip the day away. Want to while away the weekend wine in hand? As part of Rosé Revolution, La Lune Wine Co and Maeve Wine Bar will both host delectable four-course lunches with matching rosés this Saturday.

If you’re eager to stroll through some stalls and stock up on some fresh fruit and veg, be sure check out these markets happening – Saturday Fresh MarketRiverside MarketsKelvin Grove Village MarketJan Powers Farmers MarketsDavies Park MarketCarseldine Markets and the Redcliffe Markets. For delicious dinnertime eats, Eat Street Northshore is on for your snacking pleasure on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. For a hint of mystery, head to Westoria this Friday – a brand-new night market bringing a sense of wonder, excitement and sense-enlivening magic to 120 Jane Street, just next door to the home of the West End Markets at Davies Park. Expect stilt walkers and fire twirlers weaving through the crowd, tarot-card readers telling fortunes, aromatic street-food stalls hawking all sorts of tempting eats, bars dispensing beers, wines and signature cocktails, and musicians filling the air with sweet sounds. Fish Lane Markets are returning this Sunday for another local shopping event at Town Square in South Brisbane. You can expect a bevy of independent local makers and designers selling the likes of ceramics, art, accessories, plants, dog accessories, natural skincare and more. Pet parents can take their four-legged friends to Barktoberfest! this Saturday where there will be tons of entertainment, animal-focused market stalls, arts ‘n’ crafts and gourmet food (for pets and people).
