So it was only natural that it would draw in the likes of contemporary creatives, one being Australian artist Gerwyn Davies.

The creative figure was recently invited to stay and respond directly to the iconic architectural features of the popular accomodation spot through his dynamic photography. Now, we get to treat our peepers to the stunning photography series called Pleasure, which is set to arrive at The Calile Hotel this month.

Although a spectacular destination in itself, The Calile Hotel is also known for the interesting guests it attracts to its midst – even Matt Damon was said to have visited recently. The Richards and Spence-designed beauty also recently welcomed another big name, that of Davies, for an artistic collaboration that’s well worth checking out.

Created in conjunction with Jan Murphy Gallery, Gerwyn’s photography exhibition Pleasure will be unveiled on location at The Calile from September 15, the very same place it was shot.

The artworks follow a group of playful misfits that have checked into the hotel donned in colourful costumes, and have made the space their playground. The concept for the exhibition originated before the pandemic, and after an extensive site visit Gerwyn checked into the hotel with a rack of eccentric costumes (some created in response to aspects of the hotel) and a mission to get snap happy.

The result is an enchanting series of photographs that are sure to turn heads when they appear at the hotel for a pop-up exhibition. To fully immerse yourself in this eye-popping art experience, be sure to register for a conversation with Gerwyn Davies and Vault magazine editor Alison Kubler on Saturday September 17.

The conversation will be held at Living Edge in Fortitude Valley, followed by an informal artist-led tour of the exhibition at The Calile. RSVP your attendance on the Eventbrite website.

Check in and check out Gerywn Davies’ new Pleasure exhibition at The Calile Hotel from September 15 to October 4.
