Peaking 75m above the river, the bridge’s mast and supporting cables were illuminated this week to join the city’s celebration of the FIFA Women’s World Cup – and just in time for the Brisbane Festival.

While it will not be open for foot traffic until the new year, the bridge adds an elegant new feature to complement the fast-growing Queen’s Wharf precinct, according to Star’s Chief Operating Officer Kelvin Dodt.

“We have done some testing in recent weeks, but this will be the first time the lights on the pedestrian bridge will be turned on for all to see and enjoy,” he said.

Mr Dodt said The Treasury Brisbane would also be lit up in the Matildas’ colours.

The bridge’s 320-metre superstructure will add to the festivities at South Bank’s FIFA live site.

“The bridge will be a beacon for cross river connection when it opens and links South Bank to the Queen’s Wharf precinct, so we felt it was the perfect time to flick the switch and be part of Brisbane’s celebration of the World Cup,” Dodt said.

Named in honour of Australia’s first federal Indigenous parliamentarian, the Neville Bonner Bridge is expected to provide  10,000 pedestrian crossings a day. More than 1000 tonnes of superstructure support 2750 cubic metres of concrete.
