The highly infectious disease was detected in a person who had recently returned from overseas travel and while there was only a single case the Sunshine Coast Health Service said cases can remain dormant for some time.

The Raw + Rice restaurant was identified as a venue of concern and people who have been there have been asked to monitor their health.

Free vaccinations at a pop-up centre in Noosa will be offered to reduce the risk of spreading the disease.

Hep A is transmitted by faecal matter and symptoms are fever, nausea, lack of appetite, and abdominal pain. Dark urine is usually the first sign followed by jaundice and can last for several months.

The disease is generally more serious in adults than children and younger children often have few symptoms. However, they can still infect adults.

The health service said the disease can be dormant for several weeks before symptoms emerge.
