Two years, a global pandemic, 9000 great stories – and we’re just getting started

Two years ago today we launched our first edition of InQueensland.

We did so with high hopes to deliver a new kind of news service for the people of Queensland, many of whom were looking for something more than what was on offer.

Our focus was, and still is, on news, politics, business and arts and culture. A deep dive into what’s really going on – with some of the state’s best and brightest columnists observing and analysing life in Queensland. It was a great aspiration before anyone had heard of Covid-19.

Suddenly, just weeks after our launch our news agenda changed.

But in one bit of good news, the virus ended up doing us a favour.

It put into sharp focus the important role news and public interest journalism played to inform and alert the local community about impacts of global pandemic.

Credible news sources have rarely been more important and valued. And our journalism was not locked behind a paywall for a gated community – instead providing free public interest news and open access to all. A growing audience responded and continues to do so.

And in the emerging digital news media landscape, we can report, react, dispatch and engage with our readers within minutes, rather than the next day.

So in some ways, the pandemic has been an opportunity for us to showcase InQueensland – and the value of digital media – to our readers

Some other stats we’re proud to report:

  • InQueensland is now ranked in the top 30 news websites in Australia
  • We have published 786 editions, and distributed over 21.5 million eNewsletters
  • We have produced over 9,000 stories over two years and have provided employment for over a dozen journalists and media professionals.
  • Over 3 million people have read our work
  • We have secured funding from Google and Facebook to republish our local journalism worldwide.

And it feels like we’re just getting started.

Thank you for supporting us over the past two years. We’re glad and proud to be here, we hope you are too.
