Good Thursday: Premier to lift lockdown at midday, ‘good to go’ for Easter

After another record day of testing, only one new case of COVID-19, linked to an existing cluster, means the greater Brisbane lockdown can be lifted sooner than planned.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk this morning said the linked case, and record 34,711 tests in 24 hours, met the requirement for the three-day lockdown to be brought to an end.

In an effort to avoid traffic chaos tonight, ahead of the Easter long weekend, the lockdown will be lifted at midday Queensland time. Palaszczuk has asked other states to remove the hotspot declaration on greater Brisbane to allow for more travel.

But Palaszczuk warned people to remain vigilant and said some restrictions would remain for two weeks, including mandatory masks across Queensland and crowd limits in homes and public venues, including churches.

“The lockdown has been lifted in greater Brisbane but we are not out of the woods yet,” Palaszczuk said.

Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young said she did not believe the lockdown was needed to manage the two clusters if Queenslanders continued to follow the rules.

Young said the latest community case was a member of the Byron Bay hen’s weekend group who had initially tested negative upon return to Wide Bay but subsequently tested positive.

“They have been in quarantine during their infectious period so no risk at all,” Young said.

A Princess Alexandra Hospital nurse infected her sister before travelling to Byron Bay for the hen’s weekend. Eight Queenslanders have been infected in that group, as well as a local man in Byron Bay, prompting the cancellation of the Bluesfest music festival.
