Police said the 35-year-old was involved in an argument on Hanlan St outside the Beachcomber Apartments in Surfers Paradise about 7:15pm on Tuesday.
During the argument, he was stabbed once in the torso and collapsed on the footpath. He later died in Gold Coast Hospital.
The dead man, who was a Surfers Paradise resident, had not been staying at the Beachcomber apartments and there was a group of people on the footpath when he was stabbed.
Detective Inspector Chris Ahearn earlier said police were keeping an open mind as to how many people were involved in the man’s death.
“It’s certainly not a spousal partner or some sort of situation like that; our early indications are they are loosely known to each other – the group,” Ahearn said.
“We believe some of the people on the street were from within that building. We have been speaking to them during the night … and further interviews today with all the residents in that apartment building.”
The weapon has not been located although it appeared to be from an “edged weapon, like a knife or something similar”, he said.
Investigators conducted searches in nearby streets following the stabbing and spoke to people within the vicinity of the incident.
A 20-year-old woman was arrested late on Wednesday afternoon. Police said she and the man knew each other.
The Labrador woman has been charged with one count of murder and will appear in Southport Magistrates Court on Thursday.
