After eight years Star casino stalls again but says it will be worth the wait

The list of all Star Entertainment’s problems has a new addition – yet another delay in the opening of its Queen’s Wharf project in Brisbane.

The company has revealed the massive $3 billion development, which includes its casino, would now not open until April 2024. Its original deadline was late 2022.

That original timeline had been pushed back to December this year, but even that was going to be a staged opening after delays caused by Covid and disrupted supply chains.

Blame for the latest delays were with the construction, led by Multiplex.

Star said the Queens Wharf consortium, known as Destination Brisbane, had reviewed the current construction progress and decided to amend the opening timeline.

Star chief executive Robbie Cooke said the project was not immune from the types of pressures being felt by other major construction projects.

“We are disappointed, but this transformational development for Brisbane has been eight years in the making already and it will be worth the wait,” he said.

The company’s shares have also felt the pressure. An $800 million capital raising earlier this year at $1.20 has been underwater for several weeks. Its shares yesterday closed just shy of the issue price at $1.19 and fell another 2 per cent this morning. Its half-year earnings were a loss of $1.3 billion and it still faces a potential fine from Austrac after it was hit with two, $100 million fines from the NSW and Queensland governments over money laundering compliance.

In some good news, Star said it had received the keys to parts of the Queen’s Wharf project, namely several dining, entertainment and gaming areas on levels five and six.

“The third and final sky deck bridge section was moved into place on Friday June 2, allowing the sky deck lift and connection to take place in coming weeks,” Star said.

“The completed sky deck will connect all four towers of the Queen’s Wharf development and signify a further milestone in the project’s progression.”
