Height of good taste: Brisbane pop-up restaurant that pops up further than you expect

Brisbane will welcome its first vertical restaurant this October when Vertigo – a hair-raising eatery not for the faint hearted – opens 17 metres above ground at the top of Brisbane Powerhouse.

Diners will harness up and clip in to feast on fare from Bar Alto while enjoying some stunning city views. What’s more, guests will be given the option to abseil down Brisbane Powerhouse’s exterior to the ground once dinner is done, according to The Weekend edition.

It’s common practice to dress up a little bit when going out to dine at a nice eatery. Rarely, however, does our outfit include a safety harness, but Vertigo isn’t like most eateries.

Why? Well for starters, it will be located at the top of the 1920s power station’s iconic brick facade, right at the lip of the rooftop. To enjoy Vertigo’s gastronomic offering, guests will need to clip in and climb out to their seats on a custom-built rig, which hang 17 metres above ground.

From this lofty perch, they’ll be able to take in sweeping views of the city skyline while enjoying fare made by the crew at Bar Alto back down on terra firma. As far as dining concepts go, Vertigo is out there (or up there, depending on your perspective). But we’ve come to expect the unexpected from the Brisbane Powerhouse team, which has delivered some ambitious food-related concepts this year already (with another Night Feast scheduled for October).

Brisbane Powerhouse is operating Vertigo in partnership with outdoor tourism operator Riverlife, whose experienced team of adventure facilitators will oversee the restaurant’s safety measures (which, yes, will include unbreakable crockery and cutlery) and an end-of-meal dropline for any diner keen to make an adrenaline-fuelled abseil exit.

“Vertigo is unlike anything else in the world, it is an unexpected combination of adventure tourism and fine dining on a heritage site,” says Brisbane Powerhouse CEO and artistic director Kate Gould of the experiential concept. “Stepping off the roof of Brisbane Powerhouse to take a seat suspended at your table, four stories above the ground, will be the ultimate thrill.”

Vertigo is set to open in October, with bookings available now via the restaurant’s newly launched website.
