The namesake of the concert is the Queensland premiere of Nigel Westlake’s “Spirit of the Wild.” Composed to evoke the essence of nature, this new oboe concerto was inspired by Westlake’s journey to Bathurst Harbour in the southwest Tasmanian wilderness with politician and environmentalist Bob Brown. Renowned oboist Diana Doherty will be the featured soloist for this piece, interpreting it with the grace of an elusive forest creature—dynamic, vivid, and full of untamed vitality.

Westlake, best known for his evocative film scores, including Babe and Paper Planes, has crafted a concerto that pays tribute both to nature and to the human spirit.
