The 18-year-old man was charged more than a week after the alleged incident in northwest Queensland.

The family were staying at a Hughenden caravan park when they heard their car start after 9pm on August 19, police said.

The parents and three children – aged six to 12 – were inside the caravan when they felt it move.

“The family were able to exit the caravan as it was driven off by the offender,” Queensland Police said at the time.

The family was taken to hospital as a precaution.

The car and caravan were later recovered as police looked for the alleged thief.

The car keys had reportedly been stolen from the caravan earlier that day, police said.

The 18-year-old was arrested at a Hughenden residence on Wednesday and taken into custody.

He has been charged with offences including five counts of deprivation of liberty and two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

He has been denied bail and is set to appear in Townsville Magistrates Court on Thursday.
