This 22 and 23 November, our most popular concert of the year returns for another beloved sequel as we roll out the red carpet on three concerts of iconic film scores. The Mr. Darcy of conductors, Nicholas Buc, returns with his infectious love of music and cinema shining through as he guides audiences through a collection of film scores. Featuring the works of award-winning composers such as Hans Zimmer, John Williams, Danny Elfman and more, you’re guaranteed an out-of-this-world experience.

The Magic of Movie Scores

Whether you’re watching a film for the first or fiftieth time, the power of a perfect film score will still impact every time. In Disney’s animated film, “The Lion King”, within the first act we feel tremendous joy in “I Just Can’t Wait to be King”, followed by nail-biting suspense then tear-jerking sorrow when Mufasa saves Simba from the stampeding buffalo in Zimmer’s score “…To Die For”.

Then we have the memorable themes in films like “Jurassic Park,” “Batman,” “Superman”, and countless more, which then become shorthand in sitcoms, parodies and other popular media. Every time you hear the bone chilling “da dum, da dum” of the “Jaws” theme, it’s impossible not to associate this with being stalked by an unseen predator. The Superman March has become the go-to theme for heroism, and you can’t help but stretch out your arms in front of you in attempted flight, as if you were the Man of Steel himself.

Lights, Camera, Orchestra!

When you enter the QPAC Concert Hall foyer on 22 and 23 November, you’ll be stepping into the world of QSO’s Cinematic! Cosplayers will be roaming the foyer, dressed as characters from the films in our Cinematic program. Make sure to dress up as well and grab a photo (or twenty) with your favourite costumed character. Then, when you take your seats and the orchestra enters, you may be surprised at what you see. Instead of the more traditional formal attire, our orchestra get into the spirit of Cinematic by all dressing up as well – including our conductor! Only at Cinematic you’ll see violinists dressed as villains, flautists as fairies and harpists as Hobbits for a symphony of fun from start to finish. Then, when the music starts, prepare to be transported to the world of Cinematic!
