What’s on in Brisbane this weekend
Sure, a puffer jacket and a pair of uggs is one way to keep warm and cosy this Winter – but we’ve got something a little different in mind for you. This weekend, as Open Season kicks off its live-gig festivities, find heat amongst the crowd with perhaps a negroni in hand, or make like a Parisian in Le Grand Palais for multi-sensory exhibition, Monet In Paris, a showcase of the French Impressionist era at its finest. There’s more where that came from – you know what to do!
Live music
Imagine this – you have your favourite drink in hand, your fit is comfy and cute (not an easy feat) and you are surrounded by your best pals and like-minded people – all in the name of music. As Open Season continues, you’re invited to tune into its unmissable line-up of esteemed artists, and tune out of life’s worries as the three-month showcase of international and national sound-makers kicks off within the acoustic walls of The Princess Theatre and The Tivoli. This weekend, electrifying Australian-New Zealand indie-pop quartet – Coterie, are making moves to The Princess Theatre stage and will be slinging chart-topping hits on Saturday June 10. The stars align this Sunday June 11, as the The Pharcyde reunite on The Tivoli stage for a one-off Brisbane show, joined by Masta Ace and Marco Polo, making this event more unmissable than ever! This isn’t any ol’ line-up! Purchase tickets while you still can at the Open Season website.
Theatre, film and live shows
Moulin Rouge! The Musical is continuing to can-can into the hearts of Brisbane’s theatre-loving souls until July 27. Witness the musical mash-up extravaganza of Baz Luhrmann’s revolutionary film, which has taken performances to London’s West End and the shiny Broadway strip. Expect to hear all of the tunes you know and love, as well as new additions from pop-royalty Katy Perry, Sia and Beyoncé. This love story for the ages is a theatrical masterpiece that is not to be missed. Saunter over to the QPAC website to purchase tickets.
This weekend, QPAC can’t stop and won’t stop slinging a scintillating showcase of the live theatre kind. If Cluedo made for regular murder mystery meet-ups around the dinner table during childhood, then Agatha Christie’s: The Mousetrap is right up your dark alley. Grip the edge of your seats, as a group of seven strangers find themselves snowed in at a remote countryside guesthouse, with a calculated killer in their midst. Rule of thumb says, it’s never who you expect it to be – or is it? The mind games continue until June 11. With only a handful of shows up for grabs, you’ll need to hustle and purchase your tickets here, or else.
Pop the corn and hunker down at GOMA’S Australian Cinémathèque for a line-up of flicks from a retrospective program of Juliette Binoche’s five-decade career. Curated by Rosie Hays, the program features a selection that spans Juliette’s entire body of work and explores the diversity of her craft, including some of her most notable cinematic achievements. This weekend’s films include L’Heure d’été (Summer Hours) and Elles on Friday, Ma Loute (Slack Bay) and Camille Claudel 1915 on Saturday, and Le Voyage du Ballon Rouge (Flight of the Red Balloon) and Disengagement on Sunday. Head to the QAGOMA website to book your ticket.
