‘Eat dessert first’: Brisbane food and media icon Jan Power dies at 85
Cook, media personality and journalist, renowned for founding Brisbane’s Jan Power’s Farmers Markets, died peacefully in her sleep on Saturday night.
A vibrant and beloved figure within the Brisbane community, Jan Power was born in Glen Innes in 1939 and grew up on a sheep property in Stanthorpe, famous for its cherry trees.
She lived many lives in her time – a trained nurse and qualified cook from Cordon Bleu in London, she also worked as an ABC radio food segments presenter; TV presenter of restaurant and food stories on the ABC and Channels 7, 8 and 10; food column writer for numerous publications including The Courier Mail and Gourmet Traveller; and author of Setting the Scene, a history of performing arts in Queensland.
She was also the Deputy Chairman of Queensland Performing Arts Trust and a member of Brisbane City Council’s Arts and Festivals Board. In 1977 she was appointed as the first Cultural Ambassador for the City of Brisbane where she earned the nickname ‘Mrs Brisbane’.
Power may be best known as the founder of the Jan Power’s Farmers Markets, where she channelled her passion for fresh produce and commitment to supporting local farmers into creating vibrant community spaces. The Markets continue to operate at Brisbane Powerhouse, Manly Harbour and Blackwood St, Mitchelton, run by Power’s daughters and granddaughters.
A statement from her family said, “Brisbane has lost a true pioneer, but her spirit will live on in the markets she founded over 30 years ago which we continue to run in her name; the farmers she supported, and the many people who share her passion for food and art.
“Jan’s legacy is one of community, good humour, and the celebration of good food. She leaves behind a rich heritage that will continue to inspire and she will be greatly missed.”
Power’s self-professed aim in life was “to popularise the benefits of apathy and the attractiveness of the Queensland choko. Both highly underestimated.”
Her motto, “life is uncertain, always eat dessert first.”
